JoulWatt Gate Drivers

Microcontrollers cannot provide sufficient gate drive current for fast switching of power MOSFETs. Slow switching causes high switching losses and poor efficiency. Gate drivers provide high peak current (2-10A) for fast gate charging/discharging, resulting in fast switching transitions, low losses, and reliable operation.

Use gate drivers for fast switching; MCUs lack sufficient drive current for power MOSFETs.

Low-side drivers control a single MOSFET with source grounded. They are simple and low cost. Half-bridge drivers control two MOSFETs (high-side with floating source, low-side grounded) and are used in buck converters, motor drives, and inverters. Half-bridge drivers require bootstrap or isolated supplies for the high-side.

Low-side for simple applications; half-bridge for buck converters and motor drives.

Gate drive power is P = QG × VGS × fSW, where QG is total gate charge, VGS is gate drive voltage, and fSW is switching frequency. For example, with 50nC gate charge, 12V drive, and 100kHz frequency: P = 50nC × 12V × 100kHz = 60mW. This power is dissipated in the gate driver and gate resistor.

P = QG × VGS × fSW; calculate for thermal design of gate driver.

Gate ringing is caused by parasitic inductance in the gate loop resonating with MOSFET gate capacitance. Prevent it by: 1) Minimizing gate loop area, 2) Using gate resistor (2-20Ω), 3) Adding ferrite bead in series with gate, 4) Using RC snubber if needed, 5) Proper PCB layout with ground plane.

Minimize loop area; use gate resistor; ferrite bead; proper layout.

Use gate drive transformers for isolated applications where the control circuit and power stage must be galvanically isolated. Transformers provide isolation and can drive high-side MOSFETs without bootstrap supplies. They are common in offline converters, motor drives, and applications requiring safety isolation.

Use transformers for isolated applications; bootstrap for non-isolated half-bridges.
