JoulWatt AC-DC Converters

Use AC-DC converters when converting from AC mains (85-265VAC) to DC output. These are used in adapters, chargers, and offline power supplies. Use DC-DC converters when converting between DC voltage levels, such as stepping down 12V to 3.3V in a system. AC-DC converters include isolation and rectification

DC-DC converters are typically non-isolated point-of-load regulators.

AC-DC for AC mains to DC; DC-DC for DC-to-DC voltage conversion.

Quasi-resonant operation switches the MOSFET at the valley (minimum) of the drain voltage ringing, minimizing switching losses. This occurs at the resonant frequency of the transformer inductance and MOSFET capacitance. Valley switching reduces EMI and improves efficiency compared to hard switching.

Quasi-resonant for valley switching and reduced EMI; best for medium power applications.

Flyback converters store energy in the transformer during on-time and deliver it to the output during off-time. They are simpler and lower cost, suitable for lower power (<150W). Forward converters transfer energy directly during on-time and require output inductors. They are more complex but offer better efficiency for higher power (>100W).

Flyback for <150W, cost-sensitive; Forward for >100W, higher efficiency.

To meet EMI requirements: 1) Use proper input filtering with X and Y capacitors, 2) Minimize switching loops on PCB, 3) Use shielded transformers if needed, 4) Implement frequency dithering if available, 5) Add snubber circuits to suppress ringing, 6) Follow proper grounding techniques. Input filtering, small switching loops, and frequency dithering are most effective EMI reduction techniques.

Synchronous rectification replaces the output diode with a MOSFET, reducing conduction losses. It improves efficiency by 3-5% but adds complexity and cost. Use it for applications where efficiency is critical, typically for output currents above 2A or when thermal management is challenging.

Use synchronous rectification for high current (>2A) or efficiency-critical applications.
