When should I use an LDO vs a DC-DC converter?

Use an LDO when the voltage differential is small (under 1V), when low noise is critical, or for simple cost-sensitive designs. LDOs have no switching noise but lower efficiency with large voltage drops. Use a DC-DC converter when the voltage differential is large, when high efficiency is required, or when minimizing heat generation is important.

What is PSRR and why is it important?

PSRR (Power Supply Rejection Ratio) measures how well an LDO rejects noise and ripple from the input power supply. Higher PSRR means better noise rejection. It is important for sensitive analog circuits where power supply noise can affect performance. PSRR is typically specified in dB and varies with frequency.

Higher PSRR better for noise-sensitive circuits; 70dB+ for sensitive analog applications.

What is dropout voltage?

Dropout voltage is the minimum input-to-output voltage differential required for the LDO to maintain regulation. Below this voltage, the output will follow the input (drop out of regulation). Lower dropout voltage allows operation with smaller headroom, which is important for battery applications and post-regulation.

What output capacitor is best for LDOs?

Ceramic capacitors with X5R or X7R dielectric are preferred for LDOs due to their low ESR and stable capacitance. Typical values range from 1μF to 10μF depending on the LDO and application requirements. Place the capacitor as close as possible to the output pin for best stability and transient response.

How do I calculate LDO power dissipation?

LDO power dissipation is calculated as P = (VIN - VOUT) × IOUT + VIN × IQ. The first term is the main dissipation from voltage drop across the regulator. The second term is quiescent power. For example, with 5V input, 3.3V output, 500mA load, and 100μA quiescent: P = (5-3.3) × 0.5 + 5 × 0.0001 = 0.85W + 0.0005W ≈ 0.85W.
