When should I use synchronous vs non-synchronous buck converters?

Use synchronous buck converters for high efficiency, especially at low output voltages or high currents where diode losses would be significant. Synchronous converters use a MOSFET instead of a diode for the low-side switch, reducing conduction losses. Non-synchronous converters are simpler and lower cost but less efficient. For currents above 2A or efficiency-critical applications, synchronous is preferred.

Synchronous for high efficiency >2A; non-synchronous for simple low-cost designs.

What is the difference between voltage mode and current mode control?

Voltage mode controls output voltage directly by comparing it to a reference. Current mode adds an inner current loop, controlling inductor current. Current mode provides faster transient response, inherent current limiting, and easier compensation. Voltage mode offers better noise immunity and is simpler for multi-phase designs. Most modern converters use current mode.

How do I calculate power dissipation in a buck converter?
