What is the difference between SCRs and triacs?

SCR (Silicon Controlled Rectifier) vs Triac: (1) SCR - unidirectional device, conducts current in one direction only. Used for DC control and half-wave AC control. Higher voltage and current ratings available. (2) Triac - bidirectional device, conducts in both directions. Used for full-wave AC control. Simplifies circuit design for AC applications. (3) Gate sensitivity - triacs generally require higher gate trigger current. (4) Commutation - triacs have commutation limitations at high frequencies. (5) Applications - use SCRs for DC motor control, battery chargers, half-wave circuits. Use triacs for AC motor speed control, lighting dimmers, heater control. (6) Cost - SCRs are generally less expensive than triacs of similar ratings.

Use SCRs for DC and half-wave AC control. Use triacs for full-wave AC control.

How do I protect thyristors from dv/dt and di/dt?

Thyristor protection techniques: (1) dv/dt protection - snubber circuit (RC network) across thyristor limits voltage rise rate. Typical values: 100-470Ω resistor, 0.1-0.47μF capacitor. (2) di/dt protection - series inductor limits current rise rate during turn-on. Typical: 10-100μH. (3) Overvoltage - TVS diode or MOV across device. (4) Overcurrent - fast-acting fuse in series. (5) Gate protection - series resistor limits gate current, parallel resistor prevents false triggering. (6) Heat management - adequate heatsinking for current rating. (7) Isolation - proper creepage and clearance for voltage rating. Proper protection ensures reliable operation and long device life.

Use RC snubbers for dv/dt, series inductors for di/dt, and proper heatsinking.
