How do I select the right reverse recovery time?

Reverse recovery time selection: (1) <25ns (ultra-fast) - for snubber circuits, high-frequency DC-DC converters (>100kHz), and critical applications where switching losses dominate

(2) 25-50ns (fast) - for SMPS output rectification, motor drive freewheeling, and general high-frequency applications (50-100kHz)

(3) 50-100ns (standard fast) - for PFC circuits, lower frequency SMPS (20-50kHz), and cost-sensitive designs

(4) >100ns (standard) - for line-frequency rectification (50/60Hz) where switching losses are negligible. Faster recovery diodes have higher forward voltage drop, so balance switching vs conduction losses for your application.

Use ultra-fast (<25ns) for snubbers, fast (25-50ns) for SMPS, standard fast (50-100ns) for PFC.

What is the difference between soft and snappy recovery?

Recovery characteristics comparison: (1) Soft recovery - gradual decrease in reverse current produces smooth waveform with minimal overshoot. Lower EMI and reduced voltage spikes. Preferred for most applications. (2) Snappy recovery - abrupt termination of reverse current can cause voltage overshoots and ringing. Higher EMI. May require additional snubber circuits. (3) IXYS diodes feature controlled soft recovery optimized for minimal losses and EMI. (4) Selection - always prefer soft recovery for high-frequency applications. Snappy recovery may be acceptable for low-frequency line rectifiers. (5) Testing - verify recovery characteristics under actual operating conditions including temperature and current.
