How do I calculate power dissipation and thermal requirements?

Power dissipation can be calculated as Pd = Pin - Pout = Vout × Iout × (1/efficiency - 1). For example, a 5V/3A output at 90% efficiency has Pd = 5×3×(1/0.9-1) = 1.67W. Junction temperature Tj = Ta + Pd × Theta-JA. Ensure Tj stays below maximum rating with margin. MPS provides efficiency curves and thermal data in datasheets to help with calculations.
