What is the difference between linear and switching battery chargers?

Linear chargers are simple, low-cost, and generate minimal EMI, but have lower efficiency (charge current limited by thermal dissipation). Best for small batteries under 1Ah. Switching chargers (buck or boost) offer high efficiency (>90%) and can charge larger batteries with less heat. Best for batteries over 1Ah or applications with limited thermal budget. MPS offers both types - MP2722 for linear and MP2759 for switching applications.

Choose linear for small batteries and cost-sensitive designs. Choose switching for large batteries and thermally constrained applications.

How do fuel gauges improve battery management?

Fuel gauges (battery monitors) track battery state-of-charge (SOC) and state-of-health (SOH) using coulomb counting and impedance tracking.
