MP2722
Cost-effective 1.5A linear Li-ion battery charger with power path management and I2C interface for portable devices.
Product Overview
Description
The MP2722 integrates a 1.5A linear charger with NVDC power path management, allowing the system to operate from the adapter while charging the battery. The linear topology eliminates the inductor, reducing BOM cost and EMI for cost-sensitive designs.
The I2C interface provides programmability of charge current, termination current, and float voltage. Integrated safety features include JEITA-compliant charging, battery temperature monitoring, and comprehensive protection functions. The device supports USB BC1.2 input current limiting.
With its small 2.5mm x 2.5mm QFN package, the MP2722 is ideal for smartphones, wearable devices, and other space-constrained applications where cost is critical. The linear topology is best for batteries under 2Ah due to thermal considerations.

FAE Expert Insights
"The MP2722 is my recommendation for cost-sensitive portable devices with small batteries. The linear topology eliminates the inductor, saving $0.20-0.30 in BOM cost. I've used this in numerous wearable and IoT designs. The 1.5A charge current is sufficient for batteries up to 2Ah. The power path management allows instant-on functionality even with dead batteries. The I2C interface provides good flexibility for charge parameter programming. One limitation is thermal - at 1.5A from 5V to 3.7V battery, dissipation is ~2W, so thermal management is needed. For small batteries in cost-sensitive designs, this is an excellent choice."

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the maximum battery size for the MP2722?
The MP2722 is best for batteries up to 2Ah due to thermal limitations. At 1.5A charge current with 5V input and 3.7V battery, power dissipation is (5V-3.7V) x 1.5A = 1.95W. This requires adequate PCB copper area for heat sinking. For larger batteries (2Ah+), consider the MP2759 switching charger which has much lower heat generation.
Use MP2722 for batteries under 2Ah. Use MP2759 switching charger for larger batteries.
