What is the difference between PSR and SSR flyback controllers?

Primary-side regulation (PSR) eliminates the optocoupler and secondary reference, reducing cost and improving reliability. PSR senses output voltage through the auxiliary winding during flyback period. Secondary-side regulation (SSR) uses optocoupler feedback for tighter regulation (typically ±1% vs ±3-5% for PSR). PSR is preferred for cost-sensitive applications up to 35W. SSR is better for higher power or applications requiring tight cross-regulation in multi-output designs.

Choose PSR for cost-sensitive designs under 35W. Choose SSR for higher power or tight regulation requirements.

How do I achieve high power factor with MPS controllers?

For power factor correction, use MPS active PFC controllers like the MP44010 or MP44014. These controllers use boundary conduction mode (BCM) or continuous conduction mode (CCM) to achieve power factor >0.95 and THD <10%. The PFC stage is placed before the DC-DC converter to shape input current. For designs under 75W, some MPS flyback controllers include simple PFC functionality. Above 75W, a dedicated PFC stage is typically required to meet IEC61000-3-2 harmonic limits.
