MPQ2143
Compact 3A synchronous buck converter with integrated MOSFETs, optimized for low-voltage applications with 1.2MHz fixed frequency.
Product Overview
Description
The MPQ2143 integrates high-side and low-side power MOSFETs to deliver up to 3A continuous output current from a 2.5V to 5.5V input. The fixed 1.2MHz switching frequency enables small external components while maintaining excellent transient response.
The device features current-mode control with internal compensation, simplifying design and reducing external component count. Peak efficiency reaches 95% at 5V input and 3.3V output. The output voltage is adjustable from 0.6V to 5V via external resistor divider.
With its compact 2mm x 2mm QFN package, the MPQ2143 is ideal for space-constrained applications such as portable devices, IoT sensors, and embedded systems. Protection features include cycle-by-cycle current limiting, thermal shutdown, and input undervoltage lockout.

FAE Expert Insights
"The MPQ2143 is my go-to recommendation for portable and battery-powered applications. The 2x2mm package is incredibly small - perfect for wearable devices and IoT sensors. The 1.2MHz frequency allows tiny inductors (2.2µH in 2x1.6mm package), saving significant board space. Efficiency is excellent for this size - 95% at 5V to 3.3V. I particularly like the internal compensation which eliminates external components. The 3A current is impressive for such a small device. For 3.3V and 1.8V rails in portable devices, this converter offers the best size-to-performance ratio in MPS's portfolio."

Frequently Asked Questions
What inductor value is recommended for the MPQ2143?
The MPQ2143 uses a 2.2µH inductor for most applications. At 1.2MHz switching frequency, this provides good balance of ripple current and size. For 3A output, select an inductor with 4A saturation current rating. Recommended part: Murata DFE201610E-2R2M (2.2µH, 4.2A, 2.0x1.6mm). The inductor DCR should be under 50mΩ for good efficiency. Place inductor close to SW pin with short, wide traces.
Use MPS's inductor selection tool or contact our FAE team for specific inductor recommendations.
What input and output capacitors are needed?
For input: Use 10µF ceramic capacitor (X5R or X7R) close to VIN pin. Add 0.1µF for high-frequency decoupling. For output: Use 22µF ceramic capacitor. For low output ripple (<30mV), add 10µF additional capacitance. Use X5R or X7R dielectric with voltage rating at least 2x the operating voltage. Place capacitors close to pins with short traces.
Use ceramic capacitors with adequate voltage rating. Contact us for capacitor selection assistance.
Can the MPQ2143 operate from a single Li-ion battery?
Yes, the MPQ2143 operates from 2.5V to 5.5V, covering the full range of a single Li-ion battery (2.5V discharged to 4.2V charged). The device maintains regulation as battery voltage drops, making it ideal for battery-powered applications. At 3.7V nominal battery voltage, efficiency is approximately 94% for 3.3V output. The low 2.5V minimum input allows full battery discharge for maximum runtime.
Excellent choice for Li-ion battery applications. Calculate battery life based on efficiency and duty cycle.
What is the quiescent current?
The MPQ2143 has 45µA typical quiescent current (switching, no load) and 2µA shutdown current. This ultra-low quiescent current maximizes battery life in portable applications. For comparison, many competing devices draw 100-500µA. The low IQ makes this converter ideal for battery-powered IoT devices that spend most time in sleep mode with occasional active periods.
Ultra-low quiescent current maximizes battery life. Ideal for always-on battery-powered devices.
What protection features are integrated?
The MPQ2143 includes comprehensive protection: 1) Over-current protection (OCP) - cycle-by-cycle current limiting with hiccup mode for sustained overload. 2) Over-voltage protection (OVP) - latches off if output exceeds 110% of set point. 3) Under-voltage lockout (UVLO) - disables operation below 2.3V input. 4) Over-temperature protection (OTP) - shuts down at 160°C junction. 5) Short-circuit protection - hiccup mode for sustained shorts.
Review the protection specifications in the datasheet for your application's safety requirements.
