Zero-drift operational amplifiers use auto-zero or chopper-stabilized architectures to achieve extremely low offset voltage and near-zero drift over temperature. Traditional op-amps may have offset voltages of 1-5mV and drift of 5-10uV/C. Zero-drift op-amps like the CS6001 achieve offset voltages below 5uV and drift below 0.05uV/C. This is achieved by continuously measuring and correcting the offset voltage.

Use zero-drift op-amps for precision DC measurement applications requiring low offset.

Use zero-drift op-amps when DC precision is critical: sensor interfaces, current sensing, precision measurements, and applications requiring low offset over temperature. The 5uV offset eliminates calibration in many designs. Use standard op-amps when high bandwidth (>1MHz) is needed, very low power is critical, or the application is AC-coupled where DC offset doesn't matter.

Use zero-drift for DC precision; standard op-amps for high bandwidth or AC-coupled circuits.

Zero-drift op-amps use chopping techniques that introduce switching noise at the chopping frequency and its harmonics. The CS6001 has internal filtering that reduces this noise. For DC or low-frequency applications (<100Hz), this noise is typically not an issue. For applications sensitive to noise in the audio band or higher frequencies, add external filtering or consider a traditional low-noise op-amp.

Even with zero-drift op-amps, circuit design affects overall offset. Use precision resistors (0.1% or better) in the feedback network. Keep resistor values moderate (1k-100kΩ) to avoid bias current effects. Match resistor temperatures by keeping them close together. Use Kelvin connections for remote sensing. Implement proper PCB layout to minimize thermocouple effects.

Bandwidth selection depends on your signal characteristics. For DC or slowly varying signals (temperature, pressure), 1-10kHz bandwidth is sufficient. For audio applications, 20kHz minimum is needed. For fast transient signals, consider the slew rate and settling time in addition to bandwidth. The CS6001's 1.5MHz bandwidth is sufficient for most sensor and industrial applications. Remember that higher bandwidth op-amps typically have higher power consumption and noise.
