What is the difference between linear and switch-mode battery chargers?

Linear chargers use a pass transistor to regulate charge current, with excess voltage dropped across the transistor. They are simple, low-cost, and generate minimal EMI, but efficiency is lower. Switch-mode chargers use inductor-based switching for high efficiency (typically 90%+) but are more complex and generate more EMI. Linear chargers are preferred for low-current applications where simplicity and low EMI are important.

Use linear chargers for low current and simplicity; switch-mode for high current and efficiency.

How do I program the charge current?

The CS5180 charge current is programmed using a resistor connected to the PROG pin. The formula is ICHG = 1000V / RPROG. For example, a 2k resistor sets 500mA charge current, while a 10k resistor sets 100mA. The resistor should be 1% tolerance for accurate current setting. For USB applications, ensure the programmed current does not exceed the USB port capability.

Use 1% resistor on PROG pin; calculate using ICHG = 1000V / RPROG formula.

What safety protections are included in CS5180?

CS5180 includes comprehensive safety protections including over-voltage protection for both input and battery, over-current protection, thermal regulation that reduces charge current when die temperature exceeds 120C, a safety timer to prevent indefinite charging, battery temperature monitoring via NTC thermistor, reverse polarity protection, and short-circuit protection. These features ensure safe charging under all conditions.

Can I charge LiFePO4 batteries with CS5180?

The standard CS5180 is optimized for 4.2V Li-ion/Li-polymer batteries. For LiFePO4 batteries (3.6V charge voltage), modifications are required. You can use an external voltage divider to adjust the charge voltage. The charge current and other protections remain the same, but the lower charge voltage extends LiFePO4 battery life.

CS5180 requires external modification for LiFePO4; contact FAE for specific recommendations.

What is the typical charge time for a Li-ion battery?

Typical charge time depends on battery capacity and charge current. For a 1000mAh battery charged at 500mA (0.5C rate), the charge time is approximately 2-3 hours. The CC-CV charging profile includes trickle charge for deeply discharged batteries, constant-current fast charge for most of the capacity, and constant-voltage topping charge. The CS5180 automatically terminates charging when current drops to 1/10 of programmed value.

Typical charge time is 2-3 hours at 0.5C rate; CS5180 handles the complete charging profile automatically.
