Description
The CS5180 is a complete constant-current/constant-voltage linear charger for single-cell lithium-ion batteries. It provides up to 500mA charge current from USB or AC adapter inputs.
The device automatically implements the standard Li-ion charging profile: preconditioning, constant-current fast charge, constant-voltage topping charge, and automatic termination when complete. Charge status is indicated via an open-drain output.
Built-in safety features include battery temperature monitoring, charge timer, and reverse current protection. The compact SOT23-5 package and minimal external components make it ideal for portable applications.

How do I program the charge current?
The CS5180 charge current is programmed using a resistor connected to the PROG pin. The charge current is set by the formula: ICHG = 1000V / RPROG. For example, a 2k resistor sets 500mA charge current, while a 10k resistor sets 100mA. The resistor should be 1% tolerance for accurate current setting. The minimum recommended charge current is 50mA, and the maximum is 500mA. For USB applications, ensure the programmed current does not exceed the USB port capability (typically 500mA for USB 2.0). The PROG pin can also be used to monitor charge current during charging by measuring the voltage across the program resistor.
