Unisemicon NOR Flash Memory

UNISemicon NOR Flash supports multiple interfaces: 1) Standard SPI - single data line, simple interface, widely supported. 2) Dual SPI - two data lines for 2x performance. 3) Quad SPI (QSPI) - four data lines for 4x performance. 4) Parallel - 8-bit or 16-bit data bus for maximum performance. SPI interfaces are most common for embedded applications. Parallel interfaces are used in high-performance systems.

Choose SPI for most applications, QSPI for higher performance, parallel for maximum bandwidth.

Calculate NOR Flash density by: 1) Sum current code size (firmware, bootloader, configuration). 2) Add 50% margin for future updates. 3) Round up to standard density (16Mb, 32Mb, 64Mb, 128Mb, 256Mb). 4) Consider dual-bank needs for firmware updates. Example: 8MB code + 4MB margin = 12MB -> choose 128Mb (16MB). Common densities: 16Mb for simple bootloaders, 64-128Mb for typical embedded systems, 256Mb+ for complex applications.

Industrial grade (-40C to +85C) is suitable for most industrial and commercial applications. Automotive grade (-40C to +125C) meets AEC-Q100 standards for automotive applications. Automotive parts undergo additional testing: temperature cycling, EMC, and reliability qualification. Both grades offer the same electrical specifications and performance. Automotive grade costs 20-30% more due to additional testing and qualification.

Choose industrial grade for general applications, automotive grade for automotive or extreme temperature environments.

XIP allows the MCU to execute code directly from NOR Flash without copying to RAM. Benefits: 1) Reduced RAM requirements. 2) Faster boot time. 3) Simpler system design. Requirements: 1) NOR Flash with fast random read. 2) MCU with XIP support in memory controller. 3) Proper memory mapping configuration. Performance: XIP is slower than RAM execution but acceptable for many applications. Best for: boot code, initialization, infrequently executed code.

Use XIP for boot code and when RAM is limited. Copy performance-critical code to RAM for execution.

UNISemicon NOR Flash includes security features: 1) Hardware write protection - WP pin protects blocks from modification. 2) Software write protection - configuration registers control write permissions. 3) Block protection - individual blocks can be protected. 4) OTP area - one-time programmable region for unique IDs or keys. 5) Security registers - for device authentication. These features protect boot code and sensitive data from unauthorized modification.

Use hardware WP for boot sector protection, software protection for dynamic configuration.
