What is the difference between FPGA and CPLD?

FPGA: SRAM-based, volatile configuration, requires external config memory, higher density (1K-100K+ LUTs), good for complex designs, lower cost per gate. CPLD: Flash-based, non-volatile, instant-on, lower density (32-512 macrocells), deterministic timing, good for simple logic and glue logic. Choose FPGA for complex, high-density designs. Choose CPLD for simple logic, power-up immediately requirements, or security-critical applications.

What development tools are available?

How is the FPGA configured at power-up?

FPGA configuration methods: 1) SPI Flash - most common, store bitstream in external SPI Flash. 2) Parallel Flash - faster configuration for large bitstreams. 3) JTAG - for debugging and development. 4) Processor - MCU configures FPGA from memory. For production, SPI Flash is recommended. Connect SPI Flash to FPGA config pins. FPGA loads bitstream automatically at power-up. JTAG can override for updates. Configuration time depends on bitstream size and interface speed.
