UNISemicon NAND supports industry-standard interfaces: 1) ONFI (Open NAND Flash Interface) - widely supported standard. 2) Toggle DDR - high-speed double data rate interface. Both interfaces provide 8-bit parallel data bus with command and address signals. ONFI is most common and compatible with most NAND controllers. Toggle DDR offers higher performance for demanding applications. The interface is selected based on controller compatibility and performance requirements.

NAND endurance calculation: 1) Determine daily write bandwidth (GB/day). 2) Calculate write amplification factor (typically 2-4x). 3) Calculate daily program/erase cycles: (Daily writes x Write amp) / Capacity. 4) Calculate lifetime: Endurance / Daily cycles. Example: 8GB SLC NAND, 4GB/day writes, 3x write amp. Daily cycles = (4 x 3) / 8 = 1.5. Lifetime = 100K / 1.5 = 66,666 days = 182 years. With wear leveling, lifetime extends further.

Bad block management handles defective NAND blocks: 1) NAND ships with some initial bad blocks marked by manufacturer. 2) Additional blocks may fail during use. 3) Controller maintains bad block table. 4) Bad blocks are skipped during operations. 5) Spare blocks replace failed blocks. Good controllers handle this transparently. Software implementations must track bad blocks and substitute spares. Reserve 2-4% spare blocks for replacement.

ECC requirements depend on NAND type and process: SLC NAND typically requires 4-bit ECC per 512 bytes minimum, 8-bit recommended. MLC NAND requires stronger ECC, typically 8-40 bits per 1KB depending on process geometry. Smaller process nodes require stronger ECC. Modern NAND controllers implement 40-bit to 72-bit ECC per 1KB. ECC corrects random bit errors from noise, retention, and read disturb. Required ECC strength is specified in NAND datasheet.

Use 8-bit ECC per 512 bytes minimum for SLC, stronger ECC for MLC.
