Effective thermal management is crucial for maximizing the performance and reliability of Rohm SiC power devices. This guide covers thermal resistance calculations, heatsink selection, and cooling system design.

Thermal Resistance Model: The thermal path from junction to ambient consists of Rth(j-c) - junction to case, Rth(c-s) - case to heatsink, and Rth(s-a) - heatsink to ambient.

Junction Temperature Calculation: Tj = Ta + Ploss × Rth(j-a), where Ta is ambient temperature and Ploss is total device losses. Keep Tj below the maximum rating (175°C) with adequate margin.

Heatsink Selection: Select a heatsink with adequate thermal performance for your application. Consider natural convection, forced air, or liquid cooling based on power level.

Thermal Interface Materials: Use high-performance thermal interface materials between the device case and heatsink. Phase-change materials can significantly reduce Rth(c-s).
