CS1237 20-bit ADC with PGA up to 128x, cost-effective solution for consumer and industrial measurement applications.

Product Overview

Description

The CS1237 is a cost-effective 20-bit sigma-delta ADC designed for applications where 24-bit resolution is not required. It provides excellent performance at a lower price point, making it ideal for high-volume consumer and industrial products.

Despite the lower resolution, the CS1237 maintains the high-quality analog front-end with integrated PGA and low-noise design. The 20-bit resolution still provides over 1 million noise-free counts, sufficient for most weighing and measurement applications.

The ADC features a simple I2C interface and operates from a single 2.7V to 5.5V supply, simplifying system design. With lower power consumption than the 24-bit variants, the CS1237 is well-suited for battery-powered applications.

"The CS1237 is my go-to recommendation for cost-sensitive applications that don't need the full 24-bit resolution of the CS1231. For consumer scales and kitchen appliances, the 20-bit resolution provides more than enough accuracy at a significantly lower cost. The noise performance is still excellent - 35nV RMS at 128x gain is sufficient for 1:10,000 resolution scales. I've helped numerous customers migrate from the CS1231 to the CS1237 for high-volume products, saving 20-30% on the ADC cost while maintaining acceptable performance. The lower power consumption is a bonus for battery-powered designs. If your application doesn't require the absolute highest resolution, the CS1237 is an excellent value proposition."

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the CS1237 compare to the CS1231 in terms of accuracy?

The CS1237 provides 20-bit resolution compared to the CS1231's 24-bit resolution. In practical terms: CS1237: ~1,000,000 noise-free counts at 128x gain, 10SPS; CS1231: ~16,000,000 noise-free counts under same conditions. For weighing scale applications: CS1237 supports 1:10,000 to 1:30,000 resolution scales; CS1231 supports 1:30,000 to 1:100,000+ resolution scales. Other specifications are similar: Same PGA gain options (1x-128x); Same I2C interface; Similar power consumption; Same temperature range. The CS1237 is ideal for: Consumer scales requiring 1:10,000 resolution; Cost-sensitive industrial sensors; Battery-powered devices; High-volume products where cost is critical. Choose CS1231 when you need the highest resolution for precision industrial or laboratory applications.

CS1237 for consumer/cost-sensitive; CS1231 for highest precision requirements.

CS1237 vs CS1231 resolution comparison accuracy
What is the price difference between CS1237 and CS1231?

The CS1237 is typically priced 20-30% lower than the CS1231 in volume quantities. Exact pricing depends on: Order volume (higher volumes get better pricing); Distribution channel; Market conditions; Package type. For high-volume consumer products (100K+ units annually), the cost savings can be significant. Example cost impact: Product using CS1231: $2.50 ADC cost; Product using CS1237: $1.75 ADC cost; Savings: $0.75 per unit; Annual savings at 100K units: $75,000. The performance trade-off is acceptable for many consumer applications where 20-bit resolution is sufficient. Contact BeiLuo sales for specific pricing and volume quotes. We can also provide samples for evaluation to verify the CS1237 meets your application requirements before committing to production.

Can I use the CS1237 for industrial applications?

Yes, the CS1237 can be used in industrial applications where 20-bit resolution is sufficient. Suitable industrial applications include: Process control sensors requiring 0.01% accuracy; Industrial scales with 1:10,000 resolution; Temperature measurement systems; Pressure sensors for HVAC; Level sensors. The CS1237 maintains industrial-grade specifications: -40°C to +85°C operating temperature; Robust ESD protection; Reliable long-term stability. However, consider the CS1231 or CS1232 for: Precision laboratory equipment; High-resolution weighing (1:100,000+); Multi-channel data acquisition; Applications requiring SPI interface. The CS1237 is a cost-effective choice for industrial sensors where the measurement requirements are well-defined and don't exceed 20-bit capabilities. Many industrial applications fall into this category, making the CS1237 a popular choice for cost-optimized designs.

CS1237 suitable for industrial sensors with <0.01% accuracy requirements.

What is the effective resolution at different PGA gains?

The CS1237 effective resolution (ENOB) varies with PGA gain and data rate: At 1x gain, 10SPS: ENOB ~18 bits, noise ~1.5µV RMS; At 128x gain, 10SPS: ENOB ~17 bits, noise ~35nV RMS; At 128x gain, 320SPS: ENOB ~15 bits, noise ~140nV RMS. The 20-bit ADC provides approximately 1,000,000 noise-free counts at optimal settings (128x gain, 10SPS). This is sufficient for: 1:10,000 resolution scales with margin; 1:30,000 resolution scales in ideal conditions; Most consumer and industrial sensor applications. For comparison, the CS1231 provides ~16,000,000 counts (4 bits more). The CS1237's performance is excellent for its target applications. When evaluating the CS1237, test it with your actual sensor to verify it meets your accuracy requirements. The effective resolution depends on your specific sensor, PCB layout, and environmental conditions.

Test with actual sensor; 1,000,000 counts sufficient for most consumer/industrial apps.

Is the CS1237 pin-compatible with the CS1231?

The CS1237 is available in TSSOP-14 package while the CS1231 uses TSSOP-16, so they are not directly pin-compatible. However, migration between the devices is straightforward: Pin functions are similar (power, analog input, reference, I2C); Register map is compatible for basic functions; Software drivers require minimal modification. Migration considerations: PCB layout needs updating for different package; TSSOP-14 is slightly smaller (5.0mm × 4.4mm vs 5.0mm × 4.4mm, fewer pins); Pinout is optimized for the 14-pin package; Some advanced features may differ between devices. For new designs, choose the package that best fits your requirements. For existing designs migrating from CS1231 to CS1237, plan for a PCB revision. The software migration is typically simple - most I2C communication code works with minimal changes. Contact our FAE team for migration guidance and reference schematics.
