CS1231 24-bit sigma-delta ADC with integrated PGA, 128x gain, low noise 17nV, temperature sensor, I2C interface.

Product Overview

Description

The CS1231 is a high-precision 24-bit sigma-delta analog-to-digital converter designed for sensor interface and precision measurement applications. It features an integrated programmable gain amplifier (PGA) with gains from 1x to 128x, enabling direct connection to low-level sensor signals.

With excellent noise performance of just 17nV RMS at 128x gain and 10SPS data rate, the CS1231 delivers exceptional precision for weighing scales, pressure sensors, and strain gauge applications. The integrated temperature sensor enables system temperature compensation.

The I2C interface allows easy integration with microcontrollers, while the low power consumption of 0.6mA makes it suitable for battery-powered applications. The device operates from a single 2.7V to 5.5V supply and is available in a compact TSSOP-16 package.

"The CS1231 is my go-to recommendation for precision sensor interface applications. The integrated PGA eliminates the need for external amplifiers in most weighing scale and pressure sensor designs. The 17nV noise floor at 128x gain provides excellent resolution for load cell applications - I've seen customers achieve 1:10,000 resolution on standard load cells. The internal temperature sensor is a nice bonus for temperature compensation. Power consumption is reasonable for battery-powered scales. I typically recommend the 10SPS rate for maximum resolution and 40SPS for faster response. The I2C interface is straightforward to implement. Overall, this ADC offers excellent value for precision measurement applications."

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the effective resolution at different PGA gains?

The effective resolution (ENOB) of the CS1231 varies with PGA gain and data rate. At 1x gain and 10SPS, the ENOB is approximately 21 bits with noise of 1.1uV RMS. At 128x gain and 10SPS, the noise is 17nV RMS, providing approximately 19 bits of noise-free resolution. Higher data rates (640SPS) have higher noise and lower effective resolution. For weighing scale applications using 2mV/V load cells at 5V excitation, the 128x gain setting provides approximately 100,000 noise-free counts. This is sufficient for commercial scales requiring 1:10,000 to 1:30,000 resolution.

Use 128x gain for maximum resolution with small signals; 1x gain for larger signals.

How do I interface the CS1231 with a microcontroller?

The CS1231 uses a standard I2C interface with 7-bit address 0x48. The interface supports standard (100kHz) and fast (400kHz) modes. Communication involves writing configuration registers to set PGA gain and data rate, then reading conversion results. The DRDY pin provides an interrupt when conversion is complete, or you can poll the status register. For best performance, use external pull-up resistors (4.7k to 10k) on SDA and SCL lines. Keep I2C traces short and away from noisy signals. The reference voltage should be stable and clean - use a ceramic capacitor close to the VREF pin. ChipSea provides reference code for popular microcontrollers including STM32 and ESP32.

Use DRDY interrupt for efficient polling; ensure clean reference and proper pull-ups.
