Slkor offers several types of gate drivers: Low-side drivers for single ground-referenced switches with fast propagation delay and high peak current

and IGBT drivers with desaturation detection and soft shutdown. All drivers feature under-voltage lockout (UVLO) to ensure proper switch operation and Miller clamp to prevent false turn-on.

Gate driver selection depends on several factors: Peak current capability should be sufficient to charge/discharge the MOSFET gate quickly - calculate as Ipeak = Qg / tr (where tr is desired rise time)

Propagation delay affects timing accuracy in bridge circuits

UVLO threshold should match your supply voltage

and Isolation voltage rating for high-voltage applications. For a MOSFET with 20nC gate charge and desired 50ns rise time, you need Ipeak = 20nC/50ns = 400mA minimum. Select a driver with at least 2A peak current for margin.

Miller clamp is a feature in gate drivers that prevents false turn-on of MOSFETs during high dv/dt switching. When the switch turns on, the dv/dt across the drain-source couples through the Miller capacitance (Cgd) to the gate, potentially raising gate voltage above threshold. The Miller clamp provides a low-impedance path to ground when gate voltage drops below a threshold (typically 2V), preventing the Miller current from charging the gate. This is especially important in bridge circuits where shoot-through could occur if both switches turn on simultaneously.

Important gate driver protection features include: Under-voltage lockout (UVLO) - disables output when supply voltage is too low to properly turn on the switch

Over-current/desaturation detection - monitors switch voltage to detect short circuits and initiates soft shutdown

Thermal shutdown - protects the driver IC from overheating

and Interlock/dead time - prevents both high-side and low-side switches from turning on simultaneously in bridge configurations. For IGBT applications, desaturation protection is essential to protect against short circuits.

High-side gate drivers in half-bridge circuits typically use bootstrap power supply. A bootstrap capacitor (typically 0.1-1μF) is charged from the low-voltage supply through a diode when the low-side switch is on. When the low-side turns off and high-side turns on, the bootstrap capacitor provides the floating supply for the high-side driver. The bootstrap capacitor must be sized to maintain voltage above UVLO threshold during the high-side on-time. For 100% duty cycle or very long on-times, an isolated DC-DC supply may be needed instead of bootstrap.

Use bootstrap for most applications with <95% duty cycle. For 100% duty cycle, use isolated power supply. Contact our FAE team for bootstrap capacitor sizing calculations.
