The choice between precision and general-purpose op-amps depends on your accuracy requirements. Precision op-amps are recommended for applications requiring offset voltages below 1mV, such as sensor signal conditioning, measurement equipment, and medical devices. They minimize DC errors but may have higher cost and power consumption. General-purpose op-amps are suitable for standard amplification tasks, active filters, and buffering where moderate accuracy is acceptable. Consider the error budget of your system - if input offset voltage contributes significantly to overall error, choose a precision op-amp.

Bandwidth and slew rate determine the high-frequency performance of an op-amp. The gain-bandwidth product (GBW) indicates the maximum frequency at which the op-amp can maintain a specific gain. For AC amplification, choose an op-amp with GBW at least 10 times higher than your signal frequency. Slew rate measures how fast the output can change and is critical for large-signal applications. A higher slew rate prevents distortion in high-frequency or high-amplitude signals. For audio applications, both parameters are important to maintain signal fidelity.

Calculate your required GBW based on signal frequency and closed-loop gain. Check the bandwidth specifications in the table below.

Input offset voltage creates a DC error at the op-amp output that is amplified by the closed-loop gain. In high-gain circuits, even small offset voltages can cause significant output errors. For example, a 1mV offset in a gain-of-100 amplifier produces 100mV output error. This is critical in precision measurement circuits, sensor interfaces, and current sensing applications. Temperature drift of offset voltage further complicates performance over the operating range. SGMICRO precision op-amps offer offset voltages as low as 5uV with minimal drift.

4) DFN and QFN packages for space-constrained designs. Package selection affects thermal performance, PCB area, and manufacturing cost. Smaller packages save board space but may have reduced thermal capability. Consider your PCB density, thermal requirements, and manufacturing capabilities when selecting packages.

Op-amp noise is specified as voltage noise density (nV/sqrt(Hz)) and current noise density (pA/sqrt(Hz)). Voltage noise dominates in high-impedance circuits, while current noise affects low-impedance applications. The total noise depends on the bandwidth of your circuit - wider bandwidth means more noise. For precision DC applications, 1/f noise (flicker noise) at low frequencies is important.
