PrideSilicon Sensor Interfaces

PrideSilicon offers two main types of sensor interface ICs: Precision Operational Amplifiers for general-purpose signal amplification with low offset, low noise, and rail-to-rail operation

and Instrumentation Amplifiers for differential sensor interfaces with high common-mode rejection, precise gain setting, and excellent DC accuracy. Op-amps are ideal for single-ended sensors and general amplification. Instrumentation amplifiers excel in bridge sensors, strain gauges, and applications requiring high common-mode rejection.

Amplifier gain is calculated based on sensor output range and ADC input range. The formula is: Gain = ADC_Full_Scale / Sensor_Output_Range. For example, if a load cell outputs ±10mV and the ADC accepts ±2.5V, the required gain is 250. Include margin to avoid clipping at maximum sensor output. For op-amps, gain is set using external resistors: Gain = 1 + Rf/Rin. For instrumentation amplifiers, gain is often set with a single resistor: Gain = 1 + (100kΩ/Rg) for typical configurations. Consider gain bandwidth product when selecting amplifier.

CMRR (Common-Mode Rejection Ratio) measures an amplifier's ability to reject signals that appear equally on both inputs. It is expressed in dB, with higher values indicating better rejection. High CMRR is critical for sensor applications because sensors often operate in noisy environments with significant common-mode interference. PrideSilicon instrumentation amplifiers achieve CMRR of 100dB or higher, meaning they reject common-mode noise by a factor of 100,000. This allows accurate measurement of small differential signals in the presence of large common-mode voltages.

Select amplifiers with CMRR >80dB for industrial applications. Use instrumentation amplifiers for highest CMRR in noisy environments.

Minimizing noise in sensor circuits involves several techniques: 1) Select low-noise amplifiers with noise density appropriate for your signal level

2) Keep source resistance low to minimize thermal noise

3) Use proper PCB layout with short traces and good grounding

4) Implement filtering to limit bandwidth to only what is needed

5) Use shielding and guarding for high-impedance sensors

6) Consider auto-zero or chopper amplifiers for DC precision. The total noise is the RMS sum of amplifier voltage noise, current noise times source resistance, and thermal noise of resistors.

Proper PCB layout is critical for precision amplifier performance. Key recommendations include: 1) Use a solid ground plane under the amplifier and sensor connections

2) Keep input traces short and symmetric for differential inputs

3) Place decoupling capacitors (0.1uF ceramic) close to power pins

4) Separate analog and digital ground planes, connecting at a single point

5) Use guard rings around high-impedance inputs to prevent leakage

6) Keep high-current traces away from sensitive analog signals. Following these guidelines ensures optimal DC accuracy and noise performance.
