PrideSilicon Motor Drivers

PrideSilicon offers three main types of motor drivers: H-Bridge Drivers for DC motors with bidirectional control and PWM speed regulation

Stepper Motor Drivers with microstepping capability up to 1/32 step for precision positioning

and Three-Phase BLDC Motor Drivers with sensorless control for high-efficiency applications. H-bridge drivers are ideal for simple DC motor control. Stepper drivers excel in precision positioning systems. BLDC drivers provide highest efficiency for continuous rotation applications.

Motor driver current requirements depend on motor specifications and application demands. Calculate the RMS current based on motor torque requirements and duty cycle. For DC motors, the stall current is typically 5-10x the rated current - ensure the driver can handle this briefly. For stepper motors, calculate current based on desired torque and motor inductance. PrideSilicon motor drivers feature adjustable current limiting to protect both the driver and motor. Always include margin above calculated requirements for reliable operation.

Calculate worst-case current requirements including stall conditions. Select drivers with at least 20% current margin. Our FAE team can help with current calculations.

Microstepping divides each full step of a stepper motor into smaller increments, providing smoother motion and finer positioning resolution. PrideSilicon stepper drivers support microstepping up to 1/32 step, providing 6400 steps per revolution for a standard 200-step motor. Benefits include reduced vibration and noise, smoother motion at low speeds, and higher positioning resolution. Use microstepping for applications requiring smooth motion, low noise, or high positioning resolution. Trade-offs include reduced torque at high microstep settings and increased computational requirements.

Motor drivers are susceptible to electrical transients from motor inductance and switching. Protection measures include: 1) Use TVS diodes or varistors across the motor supply to clamp voltage spikes

2) Add flyback diodes for DC motors to recirculate inductive current

3) Use bulk capacitance near the driver to supply surge current

4) Implement RC snubbers across motor terminals for high-speed switching

5) Ensure proper PCB layout with short, wide traces for high-current paths. PrideSilicon drivers include internal protection, but external components provide additional safety margin.

Proper PCB layout is critical for motor driver performance and reliability. Key recommendations include: 1) Use wide, short traces for high-current motor connections

2) Place bulk capacitance close to the driver power pins

3) Separate high-current motor ground from sensitive signal ground

4) Keep switching nodes away from sensitive analog circuits

5) Use thermal vias under the driver package for heat dissipation
