Selecting the right Oriental product requires systematic evaluation of your application requirements. First, determine the voltage rating needed - consider the maximum DC bus voltage and add safety margin (typically 1.5-2x). Second, calculate the current requirements based on load power and duty cycle, then select a device with 20-50% current margin. Third, evaluate switching frequency - for frequencies above 50kHz, consider SiC devices; below 50kHz, IGBT may be more cost-effective. Oriental IGBT modules integrate multiple IGBT chips and freewheeling diodes in a single package with optimized internal connections, providing higher power density and better thermal performance. Modules are ideal for applications above 10kW such as industrial drives, EV motor control, and solar inverters. Discrete IGBTs are single-chip devices in standard packages (TO-247, TO-3P), offering lower cost and flexibility for lower power applications (below 10kW) such as home appliances, small motor drives, and power supplies. Modules require less external wiring and offer better reliability due to integrated design, while discrete devices allow more flexible circuit design and easier replacement.

Choose Oriental SiC MOSFETs over IGBTs when your application requires: High switching frequency (above 50kHz) - SiC devices have lower switching losses enabling higher frequencies and smaller passive components; High efficiency - SiC devices have lower conduction and switching losses, improving system efficiency by 2-5%; High-temperature operation - SiC devices can operate at higher junction temperatures (up to 175°C or 200°C); Compact design - higher frequency operation allows smaller magnetics and heatsinks. However, SiC devices typically cost 3-5x more than IGBTs, so they are best suited for applications where efficiency and size are critical, such as EV onboard chargers, solar inverters, and high-density power supplies.

Use SiC for high-frequency, high-efficiency applications where cost premium is justified by performance gains. Use IGBT for cost-sensitive, lower frequency applications.

IGBT modules cover 600V to 1700V with current ratings from 50A to 600A, suitable for industrial drives up to 200kW. Discrete IGBTs range from 600V to 1350V with currents from 10A to 100A for smaller power applications. High-voltage MOSFETs span 500V to 900V with currents from 5A to 50A for switching power supplies. Low-voltage MOSFETs cover 20V to 200V with currents from 10A to 200A for DC-DC converters and motor drives.
