What is the difference between DDR4 and DDR5?

DDR5 offers significant improvements over DDR4 including higher bandwidth (starting at 4800MT/s vs 2133MT/s), improved power efficiency (1.1V vs 1.2V), and on-die ECC for better reliability. DDR5 modules include PMIC (Power Management IC) on the module for better voltage regulation. However, DDR5 requires compatible motherboards and CPUs. DDR4 remains excellent for current platforms with mature ecosystem and competitive pricing.

What do the memory speed numbers mean?

Memory speed is rated in MT/s (MegaTransfers per second). DDR4-3200 operates at 3200MT/s with actual clock frequency of 1600MHz (DDR transfers data on both clock edges). Higher numbers indicate faster memory bandwidth. However, actual performance depends on CPU memory controller and application memory access patterns. For most applications, DDR4-3200 provides excellent performance.

What is the difference between UDIMM and SODIMM?

UDIMM (Unbuffered DIMM) is the standard memory module for desktop PCs with 288 pins (DDR4) or 288 pins (DDR5). SODIMM (Small Outline DIMM) is a compact version with 260 pins (DDR4) or 262 pins (DDR5) designed for laptops and compact systems. The modules are not interchangeable due to different physical sizes and pin configurations. Always check your system's memory slot type before purchasing.

Can I mix different memory speeds?

While possible, mixing different memory speeds is not recommended. When mixed, all modules will run at the speed of the slowest module. For best performance and stability, use identical modules with the same capacity, speed, and timings. If mixing is necessary, ensure all modules support the lowest common speed and timings.

What is XMP and do I need it?

XMP (Extreme Memory Profile) is Intel's technology for running memory above standard JEDEC speeds. AMD uses similar AMP or DOCP profiles. Enabling XMP in BIOS allows memory to run at its rated speed (e.g., DDR4-3600) rather than default (DDR4-2133/2400). For high-speed memory modules, XMP is essential to achieve advertised performance. Most gaming and performance motherboards support XMP.
