How do I select the right TVS diode for my application?

Selecting the right TVS diode involves several key parameters: (1) Working Voltage (V_RWM) - Must be higher than the normal operating voltage of your circuit, typically 1.1-1.2× V_operating

(2) Breakdown Voltage (V_BR) - The voltage at which the TVS begins to conduct, must be below the maximum voltage your circuit can withstand

(3) Clamping Voltage (V_C) - The maximum voltage the TVS will allow during a transient event, must be below the damage threshold of protected components

(4) Peak Pulse Power (P_PPM) - Must be sufficient to handle the expected transient energy, consider 400W (SMAJ), 600W (SMBJ), or 1500W (SMCJ) ratings

(5) Response Time - TVS diodes respond in picoseconds for fast protection. For example, protecting a 12V automotive system: use SMAJ16CA (16V working, 26V clamping, 400W). Always verify the clamping voltage at your expected peak pulse current.
