Choose buck converters for high efficiency; LDOs for low noise applications.

Use a buck converter when the input-output voltage difference is large (>1V) and efficiency is critical, such as in battery-powered applications. Use an LDO when the voltage difference is small, noise must be minimized, or simplicity is preferred. For noise-sensitive analog circuits, an LDO is typically preferred despite lower efficiency.

Linsimicro synchronous buck converters achieve peak efficiencies up to 95% depending on input voltage, output voltage, and load current. Efficiency remains high (>90%) across a wide load range due to advanced control schemes and low-resistance power switches.

Select based on your efficiency requirements and operating conditions.

Inductor selection depends on switching frequency, output current, and allowable ripple current. Higher switching frequencies allow smaller inductors but may reduce efficiency. A good starting point is to set ripple current to 20-40% of maximum output current. The inductor must be rated for the peak current and have low DC resistance for best efficiency.
