Push-pull outputs actively drive both high and low logic levels, providing fast rise and fall times and the ability to source and sink current. This configuration is ideal for driving logic inputs and when fast switching is required. Open-drain (or open-collector) outputs can only sink current (pull low) and require an external pull-up resistor to establish the high logic level. Open-drain outputs offer flexibility in logic level translation - the pull-up can be connected to a different voltage than the comparator supply. They also allow wired-AND connections where multiple comparators share a common output line. Gainsil offers both configurations: GS83xx series typically has push-pull outputs while some GS87xx variants offer open-drain options.

Choose push-pull for fastest switching and direct logic drive. Choose open-drain for level translation, wired-AND, or when interfacing to different logic voltage levels.

Without hysteresis, a comparator's output can oscillate rapidly when the input signal is near the threshold voltage due to noise. Internal hysteresis creates two distinct threshold voltages: one for rising input signals and a lower one for falling signals. The difference between these thresholds (hysteresis voltage) must be exceeded before the output switches, preventing noise-induced chatter. Gainsil comparators with internal hysteresis typically provide 4-10mV of built-in hysteresis. For applications requiring different hysteresis levels, external positive feedback can be added to adjust the threshold separation. Hysteresis is particularly important in slow-moving signal applications and noisy environments where input signals may dwell near the threshold.

Select comparators with internal hysteresis for noisy environments. Calculate required hysteresis voltage based on expected noise amplitude and add external feedback if needed.

Propagation delay requirements depend on your signal characteristics and system timing. For power supply monitoring and battery management, delays of 1-10μs are typically acceptable. For sensor threshold detection in control systems, 100ns to 1μs is usually sufficient. High-speed switching power supplies and motor drives may require delays under 100ns. The GS83xx series offers 1-4μs propagation delay for general-purpose applications. The GS87xx high-speed family provides under 100ns delay for demanding applications. Consider that faster comparators generally consume more power - select the slowest comparator that meets your timing requirements to minimize power consumption. Also account for additional delay from input filtering if used.

Calculate your maximum acceptable detection delay based on system requirements. Select comparators with propagation delay providing at least 50% margin below your maximum.

A window comparator detects when a signal is within a defined voltage range (window) using two comparators and a logic gate. Connect the input signal to both comparator non-inverting inputs. Apply the upper threshold to one comparator's inverting input and the lower threshold to the other. The first comparator outputs high when input exceeds upper threshold

the second outputs high when input is below lower threshold. Combine outputs with an OR gate - when neither comparator is high, the signal is within the window. Alternatively, use open-drain outputs with a wired-AND configuration. Gainsil's GS8743 dual comparator is ideal for window detector applications. Precision voltage references (GS431) provide stable threshold voltages. Add hysteresis to each comparator if the input signal has noise near the thresholds.

Gainsil comparators feature rail-to-rail input common-mode range on most models, allowing input signals to extend to both supply rails. This is achieved using complementary input stages (both PNP and NPN differential pairs). Below approximately 1.5V from VCC, the PNP stage is active

above this voltage, the NPN stage takes over. There may be a small offset voltage change during the transition region. For applications where input signals approach the supply rails, verify the common-mode range specification in the datasheet. Some nanopower comparators may have reduced common-mode range to minimize power consumption. The rail-to-rail input capability is particularly valuable in single-supply applications where signals may be near ground or VCC.

For single-supply applications with signals near supply rails, select comparators with rail-to-rail input specification. Verify common-mode range covers your expected input voltages.
