Gainsil Semiconductor Analog Switches

On-resistance (Ron) is the resistance between the switch terminals when the switch is closed. It causes signal attenuation and distortion, particularly when driving low-impedance loads or in voltage divider configurations. Ron varies with input signal voltage and temperature, causing nonlinearity in AC signals. Gainsil analog switches feature Ron as low as 0.5Ω, minimizing these effects. For precision applications, Ron flatness (variation across signal range) is equally important. Low Ron reduces voltage drop in power routing applications and maintains signal integrity in audio and data acquisition systems. When selecting switches, calculate the maximum acceptable Ron based on your load impedance and accuracy requirements.

Choose switches with Ron at least 100x lower than your load impedance for minimal signal degradation. Review Ron flatness specifications for AC applications.

Charge injection occurs when the switch control signal couples onto the analog signal path through parasitic capacitances. This injects a small charge packet onto the signal line, causing a voltage glitch during switching. The glitch amplitude depends on the switch's charge injection specification (typically 1-10pC) and the capacitance on the signal node. In high-impedance circuits, even small charge injection can cause significant voltage errors. Gainsil switches minimize charge injection through optimized charge cancellation circuits. For precision sample-and-hold applications, charge injection determines the hold step voltage. To minimize effects, keep capacitance on switch nodes as large as practical (reduces voltage change for given charge), use differential switching, or select switches with low charge injection specifications.

Analog switch bandwidth determines the maximum signal frequency that can pass through with minimal attenuation (-3dB point). The required bandwidth depends on your signal spectrum and flatness requirements. For audio applications (20kHz), switches with 10MHz+ bandwidth provide excellent flatness. For video signals (6MHz), bandwidth of 50MHz+ ensures good signal quality. For data acquisition, bandwidth should exceed your sampling rate by at least 5x (per Nyquist). Bandwidth is affected by source and load impedances - lower impedances extend bandwidth. Gainsil switches offer bandwidths from 10MHz to 300MHz depending on the specific device. When routing high-frequency signals, consider not just bandwidth but also channel-to-channel matching for multi-channel applications.

Select switches with bandwidth at least 5x your maximum signal frequency. Consider impedance matching for high-frequency applications.

SPST (Single-Pole Single-Throw) switches act as simple on/off switches connecting or disconnecting a single signal path. They're used for signal gating and power routing. SPDT (Single-Pole Double-Throw) switches connect a common terminal to one of two selectable terminals, useful for signal selection and routing. Multiplexers (MUX) extend this concept to select one of many inputs to a single output (or vice versa for demultiplexers). Gainsil offers GS4157 as an SPDT switch ideal for 2:1 signal selection. SPST switches are simplest and smallest

multiplexers offer highest integration. Break-before-make operation ensures no momentary connection between switched signals during transitions. Choose based on your routing complexity and channel count requirements.

Use SPST for simple on/off switching, SPDT for 2:1 selection, and multiplexers for many-to-one routing. Verify break-before-make timing for your application.

Leakage current through an off switch can cause errors in high-impedance circuits. Gainsil switches specify leakage current in the nanoampere range at room temperature, increasing at high temperatures. To minimize effects, keep source impedances as low as practical. Add guard rings around high-impedance nodes biased at the signal potential to intercept leakage currents. Maintain proper PCB cleanliness - flux residue and contamination increase surface leakage. For critical applications, consider using differential switching to cancel leakage effects. Temperature affects leakage exponentially, so derate specifications for high-temperature operation. In sample-and-hold applications, leakage determines droop rate during hold mode - calculate maximum hold time based on leakage and hold capacitor value.

For high-impedance applications, use low-leakage switches, implement guard rings, and maintain PCB cleanliness. Calculate error budget including temperature effects.
