RS-485 supports multi-point (multi-drop) communication with up to 32 drivers and 32 receivers on the same bus, using half-duplex or full-duplex modes. RS-422 is point-to-point or multi-drop with one driver and up to 10 receivers, typically full-duplex. RS-485 is more common for industrial networks requiring multiple nodes. RS-422 is simpler for point-to-point links. Both use differential signaling for noise immunity. Choose RS-485 for multi-node networks, RS-422 for simpler point-to-point applications.

Xinbole RS-485 transceivers support various data rates depending on the model. Standard speed devices (XB-48501) support up to 500kbps for industrial automation. High-speed devices (XB-48520) support up to 20Mbps for fast data acquisition. The maximum reliable distance decreases with higher data rates. At 9600bps, RS-485 can communicate over 1200 meters. At 20Mbps, maximum distance is typically less than 10 meters. Select speed grade based on your data rate and distance requirements.

Xinbole interface ICs include comprehensive protection features: ESD protection (±15kV IEC 61000-4-2 contact/air discharge) for handling electrostatic discharge. Thermal shutdown protects against overheating. Short-circuit protection limits current during bus contention or faults. Common-mode transient immunity ensures reliable operation in noisy environments. Some devices include fail-safe features to ensure defined output states when inputs are open or shorted. Use CAN bus for applications requiring high reliability, collision detection, and priority-based messaging. CAN includes hardware error detection, automatic retransmission, and message prioritization. It's the standard for automotive and many industrial control networks. Use RS-485 for simpler master-slave or peer-to-peer communication where protocol handling is done in software. RS-485 is lower cost and simpler to implement for basic data links. CAN requires more complex protocol stacks but provides more robust communication.

RS-485 buses require termination resistors at both ends to prevent signal reflections. Use 120Ω resistors matching the cable characteristic impedance. Place one resistor at each physical end of the bus, not at every node. For short buses (<10 meters) at low speeds, termination may be optional. For long buses or high speeds, termination is essential. Also use a bias resistor network (typically 560Ω pull-up to 5V and 560Ω pull-down to ground) at one end to ensure idle bus state.

Terminate both ends with 120Ω. Add bias resistors for fail-safe idle state.
