What is the difference between precision and high-speed op-amps?

Precision op-amps prioritize DC accuracy with low offset voltage, low drift, and low noise for accurate signal conditioning. They typically have lower bandwidth (kHz to MHz range). High-speed op-amps prioritize bandwidth and slew rate for fast signal processing, with bandwidths from tens to hundreds of MHz. They may have higher offset and noise. Choose precision op-amps for sensor signal conditioning and measurement. Choose high-speed op-amps for video, communications, and fast data acquisition.

How do I select the right op-amp bandwidth?

Op-amp bandwidth should be 5-10x higher than your signal bandwidth for adequate gain flatness. For a 1MHz signal, select an op-amp with 5-10MHz minimum gain bandwidth product (GBW). Consider closed-loop gain - higher gain requires higher GBW op-amps. For unity gain buffers, GBW equals bandwidth. Also consider slew rate for large signal applications. Calculate required slew rate as 2π × f × Vpeak. Insufficient slew rate causes distortion.

What is input offset voltage and why does it matter?

Input offset voltage is the differential voltage required at the op-amp inputs to produce zero output. It is the input-referred DC error. They are not compensated for stability in closed-loop configurations. Op-amps are designed for linear operation with negative feedback and would be slow and unpredictable if used as comparators. Never use op-amps as comparators in production designs - use proper comparators for reliable performance.

What factors affect analog switch performance?

Key analog switch parameters include: On-resistance (RON) - lower is better for signal integrity. On-resistance flatness - variation with signal voltage. Off-isolation - how well the switch blocks signals when off. Charge injection - glitch when switching that can disturb sensitive signals. Bandwidth - frequency range the switch can pass. Crosstalk - signal coupling between channels. Select switches based on your signal characteristics and system requirements.
