Professional Insights

Based on extensive experience with solar PV installations, this solution addresses the most common protection challenges in the field.

Key Takeaways

  • Size fuses at 1.5-1.8x Isc, not Imp
  • Always use gPV-classified fuses for solar
  • 1500V rating recommended for new installations
  • Consider temperature derating for rooftop installations
  • Verify fuse holder is also rated 1500VDC

Decision Framework

Solar PV Protection Decision Framework
Steps:
  1. Calculate string Isc from module datasheet
  2. Apply 1.5-1.8x multiplier for fuse rating
  3. Select gPV fuse with appropriate current rating
  4. Verify 1500VDC voltage rating
  5. Select matching 1500VDC fuse holder

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate the correct fuse size for PV strings?

PV fuse sizing formula: Fuse Rating = 1.5 to 1.8 x Isc (string short-circuit current). Steps: 1) Find module Isc at STC from datasheet

2) Calculate string Isc (same as single module Isc for series strings)

3) Multiply by 1.5-1.8 safety factor

4) Round up to next standard fuse size. Example: Module Isc = 10.5A, String Isc = 10.5A, Fuse = 10.5 x 1.56 = 16.4A, Select 20A fuse. Never use Imp (maximum power current) for fuse sizing - this will result in undersized fuses. NEC requires minimum 1.56x Isc. Use 1.8x for high-temperature installations or where additional margin desired.

Calculate 1.5-1.8x string Isc and round up to standard size. Use Isc from module datasheet, not Imp.

Why can't I use standard gG fuses for solar applications?

Standard gG fuses are not suitable for PV because: 1) PV fault currents are low - typically only 1.2-1.5x normal current, while gG fuses may not operate reliably at these low overcurrents

2) PV systems have high source impedance - fault current is limited by module characteristics

3) gPV fuses are specifically tested and classified for PV applications per IEC 60269-6

4) gPV fuses have modified time-current characteristics for reliable PV fault clearing

5) UL 248-19 specifically addresses PV fuse requirements. Using standard fuses can result in fuses that don't clear faults or nuisance-blow under normal operation. Always use gPV-classified fuses marked with gPV symbol.

Always use gPV-classified fuses for solar applications. Standard gG fuses are not suitable for PV fault characteristics.
