FAE Expert Insights
"The NSi8100 is my preferred choice for automotive CAN applications requiring isolation. The CAN FD support up to 5Mbps is essential for modern automotive networks handling high data loads. The 5kVrms isolation provides excellent safety margins for powertrain and battery management applications. I've used this device in several BMS projects where isolation between high-voltage battery and low-voltage control is critical. The AEC-Q100 qualification gives confidence for automotive production. The integrated solution saves significant PCB space compared to discrete isolator plus CAN transceiver. For body electronics and gateway modules, the NSi8100 delivers reliable performance with excellent EMC characteristics."

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between CAN and CAN FD?
CAN FD (Flexible Data-rate) is an enhanced version of the CAN protocol: Data rate - CAN is limited to 1Mbps, while CAN FD supports up to 5Mbps or higher during data phase. Payload size - CAN supports 8 bytes per frame, CAN FD supports up to 64 bytes per frame. Efficiency - CAN FD reduces protocol overhead for large data transfers, improving bandwidth utilization. Compatibility - CAN FD devices can communicate with classic CAN devices at 1Mbps, but CAN FD features require both nodes to support FD. NSi8100 supports both classic CAN at 1Mbps and CAN FD up to 5Mbps, making it ideal for automotive applications transitioning to CAN FD. The higher data rate is particularly useful for diagnostic communication and firmware updates.
Use NSi8100 for new designs to support CAN FD. For classic CAN only applications, NSi81C85 is a cost-effective alternative.
What termination is required for CAN networks using NSi8100?
CAN networks require proper termination to prevent signal reflections: Standard termination uses 120 ohm resistors at both ends of the bus. This matches the characteristic impedance of typical CAN cable. For NSi8100 applications: Use 120 ohm +/-1% termination resistors at both bus ends. Place termination as close to the end nodes as possible. For short networks (<10m), termination may be optional but recommended. For long networks (>100m), termination is critical for signal integrity. Split termination (two 60 ohm resistors with capacitor to ground) can be used for improved EMI performance. The NSi8100 includes internal fail-safe biasing to ensure defined bus state when idle, eliminating the need for external biasing resistors in most applications.
Use 120 ohm termination at both bus ends. Keep termination resistors close to end nodes for optimal signal integrity.
