NCE Power GaN Devices

GaN devices offer significant advantages: (1) Lower switching losses - 10x lower Qg and faster switching enable MHz operation. (2) Higher efficiency - combined lower switching and conduction losses improve efficiency by 1-3%. (3) Higher frequency - can operate at 500kHz-1MHz vs 100kHz for silicon. (4) Smaller magnetics - higher frequency enables smaller transformers and inductors. (5) Higher power density - smaller overall solution size. (6) Better thermal performance - lower losses reduce heat generation. Trade-offs include higher cost, more sensitive gate drive requirements, and limited high-voltage options (>650V).

Use GaN for high-frequency (>200kHz) or high-efficiency critical applications.

GaN gate drive requirements differ from silicon MOSFETs: (1) Gate voltage - typically 5V for on-state (not 10-12V like silicon). Higher voltage can damage device. (2) Gate threshold - 1-2V typical, much lower than silicon. (3) Gate drive loop - minimize inductance (<1nH) to prevent oscillation. (4) dv/dt immunity - GaN devices are sensitive to high dv/dt
