Mxtronics Interface ICs

Mxtronics offers interface ICs for multiple protocols: RS-485/RS-422 for robust multi-drop industrial networks with data rates up to 50Mbps, CAN (Controller Area Network) for automotive and aerospace applications with high reliability, and isolated UART/SPI interfaces for board-level communication with safety isolation. Choose RS-485 when: Long distance (up to 1200m), high data rate (up to 50Mbps), simple master-slave architecture, cost-sensitive application. Choose CAN when: Multi-master capability needed, message prioritization required, high reliability with error detection, automotive or aerospace environment. RS-485 is simpler and lower cost but requires protocol implementation in software. CAN has built-in protocol with error detection, arbitration, and fault confinement. For aerospace, CAN is often preferred for its reliability features. Mxtronics offers both with radiation tolerance options.

Use RS-485 for simple long-distance links. Use CAN for multi-master systems requiring high reliability.

RS-485 maximum cable length depends on data rate: At 100kbps: up to 1200m, at 1Mbps: up to 100m, at 10Mbps: up to 10m. These are approximate values assuming proper cable (twisted pair, 120Ω characteristic impedance) and proper termination. For aerospace applications, use shielded twisted pair with characteristic impedance of 100-120Ω. Terminate both ends of the bus with 120Ω resistors matching cable impedance. Stub length (device to main bus) should be minimized - keep under 0.3m if possible. For long buses, use repeaters every 800-1000m.

Follow data rate vs distance trade-off. Use proper cable and termination. Minimize stub lengths.

Theoretical maximum for CAN is 2032 nodes (based on 7-bit address field), but practical limits are lower. Typical maximum: 64-128 nodes depending on bus length and data rate. Each node presents a load to the bus - standard CAN transceivers have input impedance of 10kΩ minimum. For large networks, use high-impedance transceivers (100kΩ input impedance) to allow more nodes. CAN bus length vs data rate: 1Mbps: max 40m, 500kbps: max 100m, 125kbps: max 500m. For aerospace applications, typically 10-32 nodes per bus for reliability. Use bridges/routers for larger networks.

Practical limit 64-128 nodes depending on bus length. Use high-impedance transceivers for large networks.
