Montage Technology DDR5 Memory Interface Chips

The DDR5 RCD (Registering Clock Driver) is a critical component in registered DIMMs (RDIMMs) and load-reduced DIMMs (LRDIMMs). Its primary function is to buffer and re-drive the command and address signals from the memory controller to the DRAM devices. The RCD receives command/address signals from the memory controller, buffers them to reduce loading on the controller, and then drives these signals to all DRAM chips on the module. This buffering allows a single memory controller to support many more memory modules than would be possible with unbuffered memory. The RCD also generates the internal clocks and control signals required by the DRAM devices. Montage's M88DR5RCD series supports DDR5 data rates up to 7200 Mbps with advanced signal conditioning.

Use RCD for all RDIMM and LRDIMM designs. Select data rate based on your platform requirements and CPU compatibility.

A Data Buffer (DB) is required for LRDIMM (Load-Reduced DIMM) designs but not for standard RDIMM. The DB buffers the data signals (DQ, DQS, DM) between the memory controller and DRAM devices, significantly reducing the electrical load on the data bus. This allows systems to support more memory modules and/or higher data rates than possible with RDIMM alone. In an LRDIMM, the RCD handles command/address signals while the DB handles data signals - together they isolate the memory controller from the DRAM loading. For high-capacity server memory configurations (512GB+ per channel), LRDIMM with DB is typically required. Montage's M88DR5DB01 supports up to 7200 Mbps data rates with 4 DBs per module.

Use DB for LRDIMM designs requiring maximum capacity. Standard RDIMM uses RCD only without DB.

Montage DDR5 memory interface chips support data rates from 4800 MT/s to 7200 MT/s. The M88DR5RCD04 and M88DR5DB01 support the full range up to 7200 MT/s. Lower speed grades are available for cost-sensitive applications. Platform support varies by data rate - verify compatibility with your specific CPU and platform. The 7200 MT/s speed grade provides maximum bandwidth for high-performance computing applications, while lower speed grades offer cost optimization for less demanding workloads.

Select data rate based on your platform capabilities and performance requirements. Higher data rates provide more bandwidth but require more careful design.

Choose RDIMM for most applications requiring up to 2TB per socket. RDIMM uses only RCD (no DB), making it simpler and lower cost. Choose LRDIMM when you need maximum capacity (up to 4TB per socket) or when running many DIMMs per channel. LRDIMM requires both RCD and DB chips but reduces electrical loading on the memory bus, enabling higher capacity configurations. Consider your capacity requirements, cost constraints, and platform capabilities when making this decision.

For most applications, RDIMM provides the best balance of capacity and cost. Use LRDIMM only when maximum capacity is required.

The SPD Hub (Serial Presence Detect Hub) in DDR5 modules manages the configuration and monitoring data for the memory module. Unlike DDR4 where SPD was a simple EEPROM, DDR5 SPD Hub is an active device that provides enhanced functionality including temperature monitoring, configuration management, and hub functionality for connecting multiple devices on the I2C/I3C bus. The SPD Hub stores module parameters such as timing, voltage, and capacity information that the BIOS reads during system boot. It also enables real-time monitoring of module health and temperature, supporting advanced thermal management in data center environments.

All DDR5 modules require SPD Hub for proper configuration. Select based on your platform's I2C/I3C interface requirements.
