DDR5 introduces new components including SPD Hub and PMIC. However, DDR4 is more cost-effective and has a mature, stable supply chain. DDR4 design is also less demanding in terms of signal integrity requirements. The choice depends on performance needs, cost constraints, and product lifecycle.

Choose DDR5 for performance-critical applications with longer lifecycles. DDR4 is suitable for cost-sensitive applications with moderate performance requirements.

DDR4 requires controlled impedance PCB design but is less demanding than DDR5. Recommended: 8-10 layer PCB stackup, controlled impedance for DDR4 signals (40 ohm single-ended, 80 ohm differential), proper power and ground planes, adequate decoupling capacitors.
