When should I use a buck converter vs LDO?

Use a buck converter when the input voltage is significantly higher than the output voltage or when high efficiency is critical. Buck converters can achieve 90-95% efficiency. Use an LDO when the voltage differential is small (under 1V), when simplicity is preferred, or for noise-sensitive analog circuits where switching noise must be avoided.
