Awinic LED Drivers

Awinic offers several types of LED drivers for different lighting applications: Backlight drivers for LCD displays - these provide constant current to multiple LED strings with precise current matching and dimming control. Selecting the right Awinic backlight driver requires evaluating your display requirements: Number of LED strings - count the separate LED connections in your display. Awinic offers 1, 2, 4, and 6-channel drivers. LED current - determine the required current per string (typically 20-30mA for smartphones). Total LED voltage - calculate the forward voltage drop across the LED string to determine boost ratio needed. Dimming method - PWM for simple control, I2C for precise digital control, or analog for basic adjustment. Boost vs buck-boost - use boost if LED voltage > battery voltage, buck-boost if LED voltage can be above or below battery. Efficiency requirements - higher switching frequency enables smaller components but may reduce efficiency slightly. Package size - WLCSP for minimum area, QFN for easier assembly. Awinic LED drivers support multiple dimming control methods to suit different system architectures: PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) dimming - the LED current is switched on and off at high frequency (typically 1-20kHz) with variable duty cycle. This is simple to implement and provides wide dimming range. I2C digital dimming - brightness is controlled by writing values to registers via I2C interface. This enables precise control and integration with system software. Analog dimming - LED current is adjusted by an analog voltage level. This is simple but may have limited range. Direct PWM - some drivers accept external PWM signal to control brightness. The dimming range (contrast ratio) varies by method - I2C typically provides the widest range (up to 1000:1). PWM frequency should be high enough to avoid visible flicker (>100Hz) but may need to be synchronized with display refresh to avoid beat frequencies. Awinic drivers support dimming down to 0.1% or lower for dark environment viewing.

Choose dimming method based on system interface. I2C offers most flexibility, PWM is simplest.

Current matching is critical in multi-channel backlight drivers to ensure uniform brightness across the display. Awinic drivers achieve excellent current matching through: Precision current mirrors that replicate reference current accurately to each channel. Factory calibration to minimize device-to-device variation. Feedback circuits that monitor and adjust each channel's current. Typical current matching is <2% between channels, ensuring no visible brightness variation. Without good matching, some areas of the display would appear brighter or darker than others. The matching is maintained across the operating temperature range and dimming levels. For very large displays requiring more channels than a single IC provides, multiple drivers can be synchronized. Awinic also offers drivers with individual channel control, allowing compensation for LED variations. Current matching specifications are provided in datasheets and are validated in production testing.

Awinic LED drivers include comprehensive protection features for reliable operation: Over-voltage protection (OVP) - monitors output voltage and limits boost converter if LED string opens. Under-voltage lockout (UVLO) - disables operation if input voltage is too low. Over-current protection (OCP) - limits LED current to safe levels. Short-circuit protection - detects output shorts and limits current. Over-temperature protection (OTP) - reduces current or shuts down if die temperature exceeds limits. LED fault detection - identifies open or shorted LED strings. These protections prevent damage to the driver IC, LEDs, and system under fault conditions. For flash LED drivers, additional protection includes timeout circuits to prevent LED overheating during extended use. The protection features are automatic and require no external components. Status indicators may be available via I2C or dedicated pins to alert the system to fault conditions.
