Prismatic supercapacitors offer several key advantages for specific applications. The rectangular form factor provides superior volumetric efficiency, allowing more energy storage in a given volume compared to cylindrical cells. The thin profile (as low as 2.5mm) enables integration into space-constrained designs such as smartphones, tablets, and wearable devices. The aluminum laminate packaging is significantly lighter than metal can construction, reducing overall system weight. Thermal performance is enhanced due to the larger surface area to volume ratio, enabling better heat dissipation. Mounting flexibility is improved with flat surfaces suitable for adhesive bonding or clamping. However, prismatic cells typically have lower capacitance values per cell and may require more complex handling during assembly compared to cylindrical cells with leads.

Prismatic supercapacitors can be mounted using several methods depending on your application requirements. Double-sided adhesive tape is the most common mounting method, providing secure attachment while accommodating thermal expansion. The mounting surface should be clean, flat, and thermally conductive when possible. Mechanical clamping using a compression plate distributes pressure evenly across the cell surface and allows for easy replacement. PCB mounting using solder tabs or wire leads is suitable for smaller cells in low-vibration environments. For high-vibration applications (automotive, industrial), additional mechanical retention such as brackets or enclosures is recommended. Avoid puncturing, folding, or applying excessive force to the cell edges. Maintain minimum bend radius requirements for any attached leads. The mounting orientation (flat vs edge) affects thermal performance and should be considered in the design.

Aowei prismatic supercapacitors are available in thicknesses ranging from 2.5mm to 12mm depending on capacitance value and series. The ultra-thin AW-PZ series offers 2.5mm to 4.5mm profiles for extremely space-constrained applications such as smart cards and wearables. Standard AW-PS series cells range from 5mm to 8mm, suitable for most portable electronics and IoT devices. High-capacity AW-PH series cells for industrial applications range from 8mm to 12mm. The thin profile is achieved through optimized electrode stacking and advanced packaging technology. When selecting a cell thickness, consider not only the nominal cell thickness but also any additional space required for mounting hardware, thermal interface materials, or protective enclosures. The flexible packaging allows slight compression during mounting but should not be over-constrained.

Prismatic supercapacitors are excellent choices for wearable device applications due to their unique characteristics. The thin, flexible form factor conforms better to curved surfaces and tight spaces typical of wearables. The lightweight construction (up to 50% lighter than equivalent cylindrical cells) minimizes device weight for user comfort. High power density enables rapid charging - most wearable applications can fully charge in 1-3 minutes. The wide operating temperature range (-40°C to +65°C) accommodates body-worn devices in various environments. Exceptional cycle life (500,000+ cycles) eliminates battery replacement concerns for device lifetime. Low self-discharge compared to batteries reduces standby power consumption. However, the lower energy density compared to lithium batteries means supercapacitors are best suited for applications with frequent charging opportunities or where burst power is required rather than long runtime.

Prismatic supercapacitors require careful handling due to their flexible aluminum laminate packaging. Cells should be stored in original packaging until ready for use to prevent physical damage or contamination. Avoid sharp objects, bending, or puncturing the cell package. The sealing edges are particularly sensitive to mechanical stress. Handle cells with clean, dry hands or gloves to prevent contamination. Do not stack heavy objects on cells during storage or assembly. Maximum storage temperature is 35°C

avoid direct sunlight or heat sources. Humidity should be maintained below 60% RH. Cells are shipped at approximately 50% state of charge for safety. Shelf life in unopened packaging is 2 years at room temperature. During assembly, avoid applying pressure to the cell face beyond 0.5 MPa. Use appropriate ESD protection during handling and assembly.
