What types of gate drivers does AnalogySemi offer?

Choose low-side drivers for simple buck converters. Choose half-bridge drivers for motor drives and inverters. Choose isolated drivers for high-voltage safety isolation.

What is CMTI and why is it important?

CMTI (Common Mode Transient Immunity) measures a gate driver's ability to maintain correct output state during rapid common-mode voltage transitions. High CMTI (>50kV/μs) is critical for half-bridge and full-bridge applications where the high-side switch node experiences fast dv/dt transitions during switching. AnalogySemi gate drivers offer CMTI ratings from 50kV/μs to 100kV/μs, ensuring reliable operation in high-frequency power converters. Low CMTI can cause shoot-through and device failure.

Select drivers with CMTI >50kV/μs for hard-switching applications. Higher CMTI (>100kV/μs) recommended for SiC/GaN high-frequency converters.

How do I calculate the required gate drive current?

Gate drive current requirement depends on MOSFET gate charge (Qg) and desired switching time. Use the formula: I_gate = Qg / t_switch. For example, a MOSFET with 50nC gate charge switched in 50ns requires 1A drive current. AnalogySemi drivers provide peak currents from 0.5A to 4A. For high-frequency applications (>100kHz), use drivers with higher current capability to minimize switching losses. Consider separate source and sink current ratings - higher sink current speeds up turn-off and reduces turn-off losses.

Calculate required current based on Qg and target switching time. Select driver with at least 20% margin. Use higher sink current for fast turn-off.

What is the difference between bootstrap and isolated power supply for high-side drivers?

Bootstrap power supply uses a capacitor charged from the low-side supply through a diode when the low-side switch is on. It's simple and cost-effective but has duty cycle limitations (typically <95%) and requires periodic refresh. Isolated power supply uses a transformer or DC-DC converter to provide continuous power to the high-side. It supports 100% duty cycle and provides better noise immunity but adds cost and complexity. AnalogySemi offers both bootstrap-compatible drivers and drivers with integrated isolated power supplies.

Use bootstrap for cost-sensitive applications with <95% duty cycle. Use isolated supply for 100% duty cycle or when high noise immunity is required.

How do I prevent shoot-through in half-bridge configurations?

Shoot-through prevention requires adequate dead-time between high-side and low-side turn-on. AnalogySemi half-bridge drivers include programmable dead-time insertion (100ns to 2μs). Recommended dead-time is 2-3 times the MOSFET switching transition time. For example, if MOSFET turn-off takes 100ns, use 200-300ns dead-time. The drivers also include interlock logic preventing both outputs from being high simultaneously. For additional safety, use gate resistors to slow switching and monitor drain-source voltage for zero-voltage switching confirmation.

Set dead-time to 2-3x MOSFET switching time. Use built-in interlock protection. Add gate resistors for additional safety margin.
