Precision amplifiers and high-speed amplifiers are optimized for different performance characteristics: Precision amplifiers prioritize DC accuracy with ultra-low offset voltage (1μV to 100μV), minimal offset drift (0.01μV/°C to 1μV/°C), and low noise at low frequencies. They typically have bandwidths from DC to 10MHz and are ideal for sensor signal conditioning, data acquisition, and measurement applications. High-speed amplifiers prioritize bandwidth (100MHz to 10GHz), fast slew rate (100V/μs to 10,000V/μs), and fast settling time. They have higher offset voltage (1mV to 10mV) but excel in communications, video, and high-speed data acquisition. Some amplifiers like the ADA4898 offer a balance of both precision and speed for applications requiring wide bandwidth with good DC accuracy.

Use precision amplifiers for DC measurement; use high-speed amplifiers for communications and wideband signal processing.

Amplifier gain selection involves balancing signal level, bandwidth, and noise considerations: 1) Calculate minimum gain needed to amplify sensor output to ADC full-scale range - for example, if sensor output is ±10mV and ADC range is ±2.5V, minimum gain is 250

2) Consider bandwidth - amplifier gain-bandwidth product (GBW) limits maximum frequency at high gains (Bandwidth = GBW / Gain)

3) Evaluate noise - higher gain amplifies noise as well as signal

4) Check stability - high-gain circuits may require compensation

5) Account for tolerances - use standard resistor values (E96 series) and consider temperature coefficients. For instrumentation amplifiers, use the gain equation: Gain = 1 + (49.4kΩ / RG). Place gain-setting resistor close to the amplifier and use precision resistors (0.1% or better) for accurate gain.

Calculate minimum gain for ADC range; verify bandwidth using GBW; use precision resistors for accurate gain setting.

Zero-drift amplifiers use chopper-stabilized or auto-zero techniques to achieve ultra-low offset voltage and minimal drift over temperature and time. Chopper amplifiers modulate the input signal to a higher frequency, amplify it, then demodulate back to baseband - this moves the amplifier's 1/f noise to the chopping frequency where it's filtered out. Auto-zero amplifiers sample the offset during one clock phase and subtract it during the next phase. Both techniques achieve: 1) Offset voltage < 1μV (compared to 100μV-1mV for standard op-amps)

2) Offset drift < 0.01μV/°C

3) No 1/f noise (excellent for DC applications)

4) Long-term stability without calibration. Trade-offs include: switching noise at the clock frequency (typically 10kHz-100kHz), slightly higher quiescent current, and limited bandwidth (typically < 1MHz). Zero-drift amplifiers are ideal for precision sensor interfaces, weigh scales, and current sensing.

Use zero-drift amplifiers for DC precision < 1μV; be aware of switching noise at clock frequency; bandwidth typically limited to < 1MHz.

Driving high-resolution ADCs (16-bit to 24-bit) requires careful amplifier selection and circuit design: 1) Select amplifier with sufficient bandwidth - rule of thumb is 10x the ADC sampling rate for settling

2) Check noise specifications - amplifier noise should be less than 1/2 LSB of the ADC

3) Use low-distortion amplifiers for AC applications - THD should be 10-20dB better than ADC SFDR

4) Implement proper anti-aliasing filter between amplifier and ADC

5) Consider charge kickback - high-resolution ADCs have significant input capacitance that can destabilize the amplifier, use isolation resistor (10-100Ω) between amplifier output and ADC input

6) Verify output swing - amplifier must drive to within 100mV of rails for full ADC range

7) Check settling time to 0.0015% for 16-bit or 0.00006% for 24-bit. ADI's ADC driver selection guide provides specific recommendations for each ADC family.

Use 10x bandwidth rule; ensure noise < 1/2 LSB; add isolation resistor for charge kickback; verify settling time to required precision.

Instrumentation amplifiers (INAs) are optimized for differential signal amplification with high common-mode rejection. Key specifications include: 1) Common-Mode Rejection Ratio (CMRR) - indicates ability to reject noise common to both inputs, typically 80dB to 140dB, higher is better for noisy environments

2) Gain range - most INAs support gains from 1 to 1000 set by a single external resistor

3) Offset voltage - critical for DC accuracy, ranges from 1μV (zero-drift) to 1mV

4) Input impedance - very high (1GΩ+) to avoid loading sensors

5) Input bias current - important for high-impedance sources, can be as low as 100pA or 1nA

6) Bandwidth - decreases with gain, check gain-bandwidth product

7) Noise - specified as input-referred noise in nV/√Hz

8) Supply voltage range - single-supply (2.7V to 5V) or dual-supply (±2.5V to ±18V). For bridge sensors, also consider input noise and offset drift specifications.

Prioritize CMRR > 100dB for noisy environments; check offset voltage for DC accuracy; verify bandwidth at your required gain.
