What is the difference between voltage reference and LDO?

A voltage reference is designed for precision and stability, providing an accurate voltage for ADC/DAC references and sensor excitation. It prioritizes accuracy and drift over current drive. What is temperature drift and why is it important?

Temperature drift (ppm/°C) measures how much the reference voltage changes with temperature. For TPR1025 with 10ppm/°C drift: Over -40°C to +85°C range (125°C span), voltage changes by 1250ppm or 0.125%. This is critical for precision applications where accuracy must be maintained across temperature. Lower drift means better stability. 3peak offers 5ppm/°C, 10ppm/°C, and 20ppm/°C options.

Do I need an output capacitor for the voltage reference?

The TPR1025 is designed to be stable without an external output capacitor, saving board space and BOM cost. However, for applications with transient load currents or long output traces, a 0.1μF to 1μF ceramic capacitor can be added for additional stability. The device is stable with any capacitive load. For ADC reference inputs, follow ADC datasheet recommendations for decoupling.
