What resolution do I need?

Resolution selection depends on your application: 12-bit ADCs/DACs provide 4096 steps (0.024% resolution) suitable for general-purpose applications. 16-bit provides 65536 steps (0.0015% resolution) for precision measurement. 24-bit provides 16777216 steps (0.000006% resolution) for high-precision measurement and audio. Consider the signal-to-noise ratio and effective number of bits (ENOB) in your selection.

What is the difference between SAR and Delta-Sigma ADCs?

SAR (Successive Approximation Register) ADCs like TPC1610 offer fast conversion speeds (1MSPS) with low latency, making them ideal for multiplexed systems and control loops. Delta-Sigma ADCs offer higher resolution (24-bit) but lower speed and higher latency, better for precision measurement applications. Choose SAR ADCs when speed is critical, Delta-Sigma when highest resolution is needed.

How do I choose the right voltage reference for my ADC?

The voltage reference determines the ADC's input range and LSB size. For a 16-bit ADC with 2.5V reference, LSB = 2.5V/65536 = 38μV. Choose reference based on: Input signal range, Required LSB size, Temperature stability (drift), Initial accuracy. 3peak TPR1025 provides 2.5V with 0.1% accuracy and 10ppm/°C drift, ideal for precision applications.

What is ENOB and why does it matter?

ENOB (Effective Number of Bits) is the actual dynamic performance of an ADC considering noise and distortion. While TPC1610 is a 16-bit ADC, its ENOB is typically 14.5 bits at 1MSPS due to noise. ENOB decreases at higher input frequencies. For DC measurements, full resolution is available. ENOB matters for AC applications where dynamic performance is critical.

How do I interface the ADC with my microcontroller?
