Forward voltage (VFM or VF) is the voltage drop across the diode when conducting forward current. For Schottky diodes, this is typically 0.3-0.5V compared to 0.8-1.2V for standard PN junction diodes. In the parameter table, VFM is specified at a specific current (e.g., 0.5V @ 5A). Lower forward voltage means: (1) Lower conduction losses - important for efficiency in power supplies, reducing heat generation

(2) Less heat generation - reduces cooling requirements and improves reliability

(3) Better performance in low-voltage applications - critical for battery-powered devices where every millivolt counts. However, lower VF often comes with higher reverse leakage current, so consider the trade-off for your specific application requirements.

Choose the lowest VF that meets your reverse voltage and leakage requirements for optimal efficiency. For high-temperature applications, also consider how VF increases with temperature.

Package selection depends on power dissipation and thermal requirements: (1) SMA (DO-214AC) - suitable for 1-2A applications, compact size ideal for space-constrained consumer electronics

(2) SMB (DO-214AA) - suitable for 2-5A applications, good balance of size and thermal performance with reasonable copper area

(3) SMC (DO-214AB) - suitable for 3-8A applications, better thermal capability for higher power

(4) TO-220AC/AB - suitable for 10-30A high-power applications, requires heat sinking but easy to mount

(5) TO-247 - suitable for highest power 30A+ applications, superior thermal performance. Calculate power dissipation as P = IF × VFM, then check junction temperature using Tj = Ta + (P × RthJA). Ensure Tj stays below maximum rating (typically 125-175°C) with adequate margin.

The SK54 and SK104 are popular Schottky diodes with different current capabilities: SK54 (5A, 40V) features forward voltage of 0.55V @ 5A, suitable for low-voltage applications up to 40V, commonly used in 5V and 12V power supplies with SMB package. SK104 (10A, 40V) features forward voltage of 0.55V @ 10A, higher current capability for more demanding applications, used in higher power DC-DC converters and motor drives. Both feature low forward voltage for high efficiency, fast switching for high-frequency operation, and SMB package for good thermal performance. Choose SK54 for 5A applications and SK104 for 10A applications requiring higher current capability. The SK104 provides better margin and cooler operation when used below 7A continuous.

Select SK54 for 5A applications and SK104 for 10A applications. SK104 provides better headroom when operating at 6-8A range for improved reliability.

Yes, Schottky diodes can be paralleled for higher current capability, but current sharing must be carefully considered: (1) Forward voltage matching - use diodes from the same production lot for similar VF characteristics, as even small differences can cause significant current imbalance

(2) Thermal coupling - mount diodes close together on the same heat sink to maintain similar temperatures, as VF decreases with temperature

(3) Individual current limiting - consider small series resistors (0.01-0.1 ohm) to improve current sharing at the cost of some efficiency

(4) Layout symmetry - ensure equal trace lengths and impedances to each diode for balanced current distribution. Without proper matching, one diode may carry more current and overheat. For best results, use a single higher-current diode if available (e.g., one SK104 instead of two SK54s) to avoid current sharing issues.

For parallel configurations, use matched diodes from the same lot and ensure good thermal coupling. Consider using a single higher-current device for simplicity and reliability.
