Battery capacity calculation involves: 1) Determine load current in amperes

2) Specify required backup time in hours

3) Calculate ampere-hours: Capacity (Ah) = Load Current (A) x Backup Time (h)

4) Add safety margin of 20-30% for aging and temperature effects

5) Consider discharge rate - higher rates reduce effective capacity. For example, a 10A load requiring 4 hours backup: 10A x 4h = 40Ah, with 25% margin = 50Ah minimum.

Narada offers batteries with different design life ratings: 10-year design life batteries use standard alloy and construction, suitable for general-purpose applications with typical operating conditions. 15-year design life batteries feature advanced alloy formulations, thicker plates, and enhanced construction for longer service life. The 15-year series is recommended for critical applications, remote sites with limited access, or installations where replacement is difficult or costly.

Temperature significantly affects lead-acid battery performance: Higher temperatures (above 25C) increase capacity but accelerate aging - every 10C above 25C roughly doubles the aging rate. Lower temperatures reduce available capacity - at 0C, capacity may drop to 80% of rated. Optimal operating temperature is 20-25C. Narada batteries are rated at 25C, and derating should be applied for other temperatures. High-temperature versions are available for harsh environments.

Narada VRLA batteries are designed to be maintenance-free under normal operating conditions. However, recommended practices include: 1) Regular visual inspection for physical damage or leakage

2) Quarterly voltage checks to identify weak cells

3) Annual impedance or conductance testing for capacity assessment

4) Keep batteries clean and dry

5) Ensure proper ventilation

6) Maintain records of all measurements. No electrolyte addition or specific gravity checks are required for VRLA batteries.

Implement a regular monitoring program to detect issues before they become critical.

While Narada lead-acid batteries are optimized for standby applications, certain series can handle moderate cycling. The HRL (High-Rate Long-life) series offers improved cycle life for applications with occasional discharge cycles. For frequent cycling applications (daily cycles), lithium-ion batteries are strongly recommended as they offer 10-20x the cycle life of lead-acid.
