How do I select the right power supply for my application?

Power supply selection involves several key steps: First, determine your input requirements including AC input voltage range or DC input voltage. Second, calculate output requirements including total power needed, output voltage, and current per rail. Third, consider environmental conditions like operating temperature range, cooling method, and altitude. Fourth, review mechanical requirements such as mounting style, dimensions, and connector types. Fifth, check safety and EMC certification requirements. Finally, evaluate special features like parallel operation, remote sense, or power good signals.

Contact our FAE team with your application requirements for personalized power supply selection assistance and technical recommendations.

What is the difference between isolated and non-isolated DC/DC converters?

Isolated DC/DC converters provide galvanic isolation between input and output, which is required for safety isolation, breaking ground loops, voltage level shifting, and noise immunity in sensitive circuits. Non-isolated converters are used when input and output share common ground, suitable for on-board voltage regulation, battery-powered devices, and cost-sensitive applications. Isolated converters offer higher safety and noise immunity but at higher cost and slightly lower efficiency. Non-isolated converters are more compact and efficient but lack isolation.

Choose isolated converters for safety-critical applications or when noise immunity is required. Choose non-isolated for cost-sensitive on-board regulation where common ground is acceptable.

How do I calculate the required power supply wattage?

Power supply sizing involves: listing all loads with voltage and current requirements, calculating power for each load using P=V×I, summing all power requirements, adding 20-50% safety margin for derating and future expansion, considering inrush current for motors and capacitors, and verifying peak vs continuous requirements. For example, loads of 24V at 2A (48W), 5V at 3A (15W), and 12V at 1A (12W) total 75W. With 1.3x margin, select a 100W supply.
