What makes high-speed fuses different from standard fuses?

High-speed fuses open within milliseconds (<1ms) compared to 10-100ms for standard fuses. They have much lower I2t values, actively limit peak fault current, and control arc voltage to protect semiconductor junctions. Breaking capacity is typically higher (up to 200kA) for power electronics applications.

How do I match fuse I2t to semiconductor withstand?

The fuse total clearing I2t must be less than the semiconductor's withstand I2t at the same fault current. Check semiconductor datasheet for I2t rating (typically at 10ms). Select fuse with clearing I2t at least 20% below semiconductor rating. Consider temperature effects - both ratings may vary with temperature.
