600V 60A fast recovery epitaxial diode with 35ns reverse recovery time. TO-247 package for high-frequency rectification.

Product Overview

Description

The Littelfuse DSEP60-06A is a high-performance fast recovery epitaxial diode featuring 600V reverse voltage rating and 60A average forward current. With ultra-fast 35ns reverse recovery time, this diode is ideal for high-frequency rectification and freewheeling applications.

The epitaxial construction provides low forward voltage drop (1.3V typical) and excellent switching characteristics. The fast recovery time minimizes switching losses and EMI in high-frequency power converters.

Packaged in the TO-247 package, the DSEP60-06A offers excellent thermal performance and is suitable for high-power applications. The device is ideal for use as output rectifiers in switching power supplies and freewheeling diodes in motor drives.

"The DSEP60-06A is my go-to fast recovery diode for high-frequency rectification. The 35ns reverse recovery time is excellent for a 60A device, minimizing switching losses in power supplies operating above 50kHz. The 1.3V forward drop is reasonable for a 600V diode - not the lowest available, but a good balance of conduction and switching losses. I've used this diode in PFC circuits, output rectifiers, and freewheeling applications with consistently good results. One application tip: when using as a freewheeling diode with IGBTs, ensure the diode's reverse recovery characteristics are compatible with your switching frequency. The 35ns recovery time of the DSEP60-06A makes it suitable for applications up to 100kHz. For thermal design, the TO-247 package provides good heat dissipation, but you'll need adequate heatsinking at full current. The 400A surge rating provides good margin for inrush currents."

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is reverse recovery time important in fast recovery diodes?

Reverse recovery time (trr) is critical in fast recovery diodes because it directly impacts switching losses and EMI: (1) Switching Losses - During reverse recovery, the diode conducts reverse current while blocking voltage, creating a power loss. Longer trr means higher losses, especially at high switching frequencies; (2) EMI Generation - The reverse recovery current spike can cause voltage overshoot and ringing, generating electromagnetic interference; (3) Switching Frequency - Standard diodes with trr > 1µs are limited to low frequencies (< 5kHz). Fast recovery diodes (trr 50-200ns) work up to 50kHz. Ultra-fast diodes (trr < 50ns) like the DSEP60-06A can operate above 100kHz; (4) Efficiency - In high-frequency converters, diode switching losses can dominate total losses. Using ultra-fast diodes significantly improves efficiency. For the DSEP60-06A with 35ns trr: suitable for applications up to 100kHz, reverse recovery charge (Qrr) is approximately 110nC at rated current. When selecting a fast recovery diode, consider both trr and Qrr for your operating conditions.

Use ultra-fast diodes (trr < 50ns) for high-frequency applications (>50kHz). Standard fast diodes (trr 100-200ns) are suitable for 20-50kHz range.
